A Pole is For Life – Not Just for Christmas

Although I’ve used a play on words for the title – in the UK every Christmas the RSPCA had TV ads that said ‘a dog is for life, not jut for Christmas’ – I’d like to make a serious point about setting up poles that you get, whether at Christmas or any other time of year. When you’re excited it’s tempting to get the pole up as quickly as possible and just start swinging, but if you don’t check the safety instructions you can... Read More

The Art of Pole – How To Take Great Pole Dance Photos

Guest post by Dean Marzolla   As a professional photographer, I’ve worked at very high levels within newspapers, magazines and TV. Worked with countless celebrities, top models and shot in many locations around the world, and still I feel the enchantment of pole ever present.   Many are lured to watching pole for the skimpy outfits and the imaginative positions of talented women, though there is so much more about pole that can be captured in a photo. Seductive it... Read More

Pole Size – is Bigger Better?

Well, contrary to popular belief, bigger isn’t always better; especially when it comes to pole width.   It’s a matter of personal preference, along with whether you need to be getting to grips with a certain size for competitions, shows or other pole dance work.   Skinny poles make hand-grip moves easier and fat poles make leg grips easier.  As for elbow grips, I personally prefer a medium size pole – just to be awkward!!!   My advice is to always practice... Read More

Increasing Your Grip Strength

When we’re trying to hold hand grip moves for longer,  have just started pole dancing, or when we change to a thicker pole, it’s often grip strength that lets us down.   Grip strength is determined by the muscle and bone strength, size and thickness of your fingers, hands, wrists and forearms.  In terms of pole dancing, when your grip strength improves you can hold moves for longer and undertake more challenging moves.   Repetition of the moves you’re trying... Read More

Choosing a Pole Dance School

Students watch while Amber demos a challenging combo There’s more to choosing a pole dance school than just seeing which one you live close to and the differences range from the type of pole used to the style of choreography, and most things in between. Having said that, I’ve been a student of a few schools now and there’s nothing wrong with trying out a number to see where you fit best and going back and forth if it’s simply a matter of whether you can... Read More

Footwear for Pole Dancing

There are three main options for pole dancing footwear; bare feet, dance/training shoes or heels.   Bare feet enable you to point your feet and have a more natural look, but provide no protection against bruises or hard landings.  I find that my feet get fairly sweaty too, so I find it hard to grip, especially at show time when I’m nervous.   Dance/training shoes offer protection and additional grip but can appear clumpy and make maneuvering into some moves more... Read More

It’s Safety-First When on the Pole

Make sure you're safe while pole dancing When undertaking any form of exercise you run the risk of injury.  Pole dancing is no exception, in fact, you could do major damage to yourself while performing some of the more complicated tricks.  Don’t let this put you off.  When learning to pole dance in a secure environment a good teacher will always demonstrate a move/combination and stay close to ‘spot’ while each student tries; ready to catch or push into position.   Although... Read More

Taming bruises from pole dancing

Bruises after a week of pole dancing every day and trying new moves Once you start pole dancing there is no easy way to avoid bruises, unless you’re made of tougher stuff that the rest of us.   Most are relatively harmless and will simply fade away after a matter days, especially if you try some of the bruise taming tips shown below.   Sometimes it’s more sever, so if you haven’t got full range of movement of the limb where your bruise appears, the bruise is a... Read More

What to wear when you pole dance

The main things are comfort and movement when choosing your pole dance clothes. You need to feel comfortable (and that includes not being self-conscious), have a certain amount of give in the material (so movement isn’t restricted) and have the right parts of your body exposed (be able to grip the pole) in whatever you’re wearing. Many classes are now for fitness, so shorts and strappy gym tops are the usual dress code. If you are learning to dance in a strip club or want... Read More
